Growing up in the Desert: Stories told with leaves (DVD)

Jukuna Mona Chuguna (c.1940-2011) grew up in the Great Sandy Desert with her family of hunters and gatherers. As a young women she left her homeland with her husband to live on cattle stations.

This DVD is a rare video recording of an ancient method of storytelling, and a first-hand account of life in the Great Sandy Desert before contact with white people. The stories were recorded in the bed of the Fitzroy River in 1989-1990. They are told in Walmajarri with English subtitles.

Jukuna Mona Chuguna

Jukuna Mona Chuguna (deceased) was a Walmajarri woman from the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia. She left the desert with her husband in the 1950s to live and work on cattle and sheep stations in the Kimberley's Fitzroy Valley....
