This project was initiated by senior Kukatja, Wangkatjunga and Ngarti women from the east Kimberley who were concerned that their stories, knowledge and history would disappear with nothing written down. It began as part of the bilingual program at Wirrimanu (Balgo) community—the paintings were done and stories recorded on trips away from the community to sites nominated by the women and then translated with the intention of publishing a book for secondary schoolgirls.
