Magabala author Bruce Pascoe’s wonderful story about a fox cub raised by a dingo in the Australian bush has taken out the 2013 Prime Minister’s award for young adult fiction.
The highly original and captivating Fog a Dox was one of two Magabala titles in the shortlist of only five titles in the Young Adult category, with Sue McPherson’s Grace Beside Me taking the other spot.
The judges described Fog a Dox as ‘a work of profound humanity’ that ‘delights with its gentle humour, its knowledge of the bush and of the hidden workings of the heart, and its often surprising originality of expression.'
‘It gives an eloquent voice to those rarely heard. It has a place in the canon of Australian literature and is in every respect an appropriate winner.’
Bruce has written 26 books, both fiction and non-fiction, and is currently working on the retrieval and teaching of the Wathaurong language of south western Victoria. There is another book in the works which Magabala will publish early n 2014.
Bruce is a member of Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative, Bunurong heritage, and is a Board member of Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages. He is married to Lyn Harwood, has two children and lives at Gipsy Point, Far East Gippsland in Victoria.
