Blak & Bright Festival Program

Magabala publisher, Rachel Bin Salleh and past and present authors Bruce Pascoe, Ali Cobby Eckermann, Jane Harrison and Anita Heiss are set
to feature alongside more than 50 fellow Indigenous writers, storytellers and performers at Blak & Bright, Victoria's Indigenous Literary Festival, when it makes it debut later this month.

Held at The Wheeler Centre in Melbourne from 18-21 February, the Blak & Bright Festival is about recognising, promoting and celebrating Indigenous literature from across the country.

Speaking to The Weekly Review, Magabala author of Becoming Kirrali Lewis and festival coordinator, Jane Harrison said the event is long overdue.

“We’ve come such a long way from some of the early books that were first published in the ’60s,” she said. “The state we’re in now is just an explosion and a celebration of [Indigenous] writing. We’re up there with the best.”

The festival is open to literature lovers and readers everywhere, whether they are passionate or curious about Indigenous culture, stories and books. There will also be opportunities for up and coming authors to learn about the hurdles of book publishing from Magabala publisher, Rachel Bin Salleh, who will appear on a session with
award-winning novelist and editor for the black&write! project, Ellen van Neerven.

Blak & Bright is presented by First Nations Australia Writers’ Network, with Australian Poetry, the City of Literature Office, the Emerging Writers’ Festival, Express Media, the Melbourne Writers Festival, the Small Press Network, the Wheeler Centre and Writers Victoria.

For sessions times and a full schedule of events, please see the Blak & Bright website. Most events will be free though bookings are essential.
