We are excited to announce that we are the 2023 Oceania winner of the Bologna Prize for the Best Children’s Publisher of the Year!
“This is an incredible honour to be recognised by our International peers in the Publishing world,” said Magabala CEO Anna Moulton. “We have been shortlisted in the past, but this is our first win. As always we think of our founding Elders and their courage and foresight in starting a Publishing house in the 80s. This win is for them and all the creators who have trusted Magabala with their stories.”
The awards are presented in six geographic regions to publishers that are ‘at the forefront of innovation in their activity for the creative nature of the editorial choices they have made during the previous year’.
The winners in each region are:
Africa: Trinta zero Nove (Mozambique)
Asia: Wonder House Books (India)
Caribbean, Central and South America: Editorial Amanuta (Chile)
Europe: The Old Lion (Ukraine)
North America: La courte échelle (Canada)
Oceania: Magabala Books (Australia)
Magabala was one of five Australian publishers shortlisted for the Oceania category of the award, alongside Affirm Press, EK Books, Starfish Bay and Wilkins Farago.
Magabala Books Rights Manager Kate McCormack was in Bologna to accept the prize on behalf of Magabala Board, staff and our creators.
