AIC Creative Grants announced

Thu, Dec 08, 2022

Magabala Books is thrilled to announce the recipients of the 2022 AIC Creative Grants: Casey Mulder and Jenny Fraser.

Congratulations to Ballardong Noongar writer Casey Mulder and Yugambeh artist Jenny Fraser, the inaugural recipients of the Magabala Books' AIC Creative Grants of $10,000 each.

Casey Mulder

Casey is a Ballardong Noongar woman from Western Australia. She is a Secondary English teacher and Student Services leader within schools. Casey has a keen interest in First Nations storytelling in all its forms. In 2022, she received a Creative Development Scholarship from Magabala Books to complete an editing mentorship at Night Parrot Press in 2022. She currently has a Writing Fellowship at the Centre for Stories in Perth, to work on a memoir manuscript, and was recently appointed as the First Nations Editor for Westerly Magazine. Alongside her career in educational leadership, Casey aspires to advocate for First Nations storytellers in Australia within the publishing industry.

Casey will be supported to continue to work on her manuscript ‘Over the Fire’ – a coming-of-age memoir set in the Kimberley and the grants funds will include travel to Halls Creek for further engagement with Elders and families.

"This project, born out of an incredibly significant friendship, has been close to my heart for many years. I am so grateful for the support of Magabala Books and AIC in helping me bring it to completion"

Jenny Fraser

Jenny is an artist and academic interested in sharing knowledge for future healing and reference, with written and visual symbolism that can be read or interpreted in Truth Telling.

Jenny will use the grant to shape her current manuscript as well as sourcing visual materials to support her project.

''The reality of this story is very heavy, so any support means a lot, and I’m really grateful for this help to midwife my dreams of getting it out there''

Casey Mulder and Jenny Fraser will be supported to complete their creative development projects throughout 2023. Funding will support travel and manuscript development.

The AIC Creative Grant is an award of $10,000 for a First Nations storyteller, writer or artist working in any genre to continue work on a manuscript under development. Grant recipients were selected through a competitive application process and expressions of interest came from across Australia.

Magabala AIC Creative Grants are made possible thanks to the generous support of our partnership with Australian Indigenous Coffee. For more info, see AIC Creative Grants.
