Magabala Books is deeply saddened at the passing of Nyoongar and Yamatji man Andrew Krakouer, who authored with Jacqueline Dinan the acclaimed children’s picture book My Dad’s Gone Away (2024).

To all of us at Magabala, Andrew was a quiet soul with a dry sense of humour and cheeky smile. It was obvious, from the outset, Andrew thought the world of his family and wanted to leave a truth that spoke to his life and experiences. This book was one of the ways he could encompass all that.

Andrew was an extraordinary soul and a brave man. He played fearless football for Collingwood and Richmond, winning Mark of the Year in 2011 for a spectacular hanger that he launched into without hesitation. Many thought his career was over after a stint in jail but he returned to play for Collingwood and played in the 2011 grand final against Geelong.

However, Andrew’s bravery in telling the unspoken and painful parts of his story to help others is what we cherish most here at Magabala

At the launch of his and Jacqueline’s children’s picture book, Paul Kelly played ‘How to Make Gravy’, which was especially impactful for Andrew. When the song was over, he took to the stage and through tears, talked about the impacts of parental incarceration on children and the hope that a book like this could help a child feel less alone and scared.

Andrew, who experienced the incarceration of his own father and later served time himself, never shied away from the challenges he faced. Instead, he used them to push for change, inspire others and to help heal those that needed it the most.

My Dad’s Gone Away, co-written with former foster carer Jacqueline Dinan and illustrated by Paul Seden, is the first of its kind in Australia. “My Dad’s Gone Away would have been an invaluable resource for my family during my father’s imprisonment and later, for my own children and partner during my own time in prison,” he said when reflecting on the importance of the book. “This book is decades overdue.”

My Dad’s Gone Away is currently shortlisted for an Australian Book Industry Award (winners to be announced on 7 May 2025), and through our Small Seeds program, copies were donated to Acacia Prison’s Aunties program, who provide support to prisoners and their families in culturally safe ways. Staff have turned the book into a video that is played in the waiting room so children may understand what experiences they face when entering the prison.

Andrew’s legacy will live on for generations to come and will shape the futures of many children in this space, simply by sharing his truth

Magabala’s thoughts and deepest condolences are with his wife Barbara and their children, and all his family and friends.

Rest easy brother, the hard work is done. It’s our turn to help the lonely and scared children you carried in your heart; and they will find a measure of peace and gentleness because you gifted them your truth. Safe journey Andrew
